This book lists kale as a super food with 0 grams of potassium and 0 grams of phosphorus per 1 cup serving, which is completely wrong! It also lists mushrooms as a super food with 0 mg phosphorus in 1 medium mushroom, whereas the USDA nutrition database says 1 medium mushroom has 15 mg of phosphorus. Those are just 2 of the glaring mistakes in this book. When someone's health is on the line, such misinformation can have a very serious impact. As a result, it is impossible to trust any of the nutrition information provided for the recipes. Like other reviewers pointed out, do your own nutrition research!
Interesting recipes but no values are given for sugar which is needed for pre and diabetic and renal patientsC.D
I'm not an expert on the many causes of kidney failure, but I do know that a diet with foods listed as high PRAL (Potential Renal Acid Load) is one of them. They include meals very high in meat, dairy, sugar, white flour, baked and canned goods like tuna and can lead even the healthiest person down the road to eventual renal disease. The problem with this book is that the author seems unaware of PRAL. Pages 21-26 include a list of Fiber, Potassium, Phosphorous, Protein and Sodium, but nothing about acid-forming foods. The breakfast recipes alone include turkey, whole eggs, granulated sugar, white bread and honey. Next are sections on poultry, beef, pork and lamb. The soups rely on chicken stock. Ready for dessert? Canned peaches, white sugar, more eggs and cream cheese. Do yourself a favor, buy Lee Hull's book, 'Stopping Kidney Disease: A science based treatment plan to use your doctor, drugs, diet and exercise to slow or stop the progression of incurable kidney disease.' It's available on Amazon and for a few dollars more but well worth it.
Many typos. I did not trust the food values and analysis. For example it lists spinach as a super food to eat without mentioning that spinach is a high potassium vegetable and must be eaten in limited quantities. It is not, as the book suggests, a good substitute for lettuce. Later in the book on their chart of fiber, potassium and phosphorous, spinach again is rated as a low potassium food. it would be helpful to include a registered dietician as an author if they publish a revised edition. Be careful with this book and check food values!
Perhaps I didn't do enough reading in advance to know that pictures are not a part of the cookbook. I was disappointed and just sent it back. The premise is nice but most people are going to want a visual representation of what they are cooking.
This book cover looks really nice but there are a bunch of typos and mismatched fonts on the pages inside--enough typos where I felt I needed to include it in a review.The recipes are okay but a few came out gross despite following directions to the letter. The recipes are more creative than I've seen in other cookbooks, but is a moot point if they end up tasting gross.
Not just an excellent cookbook, the medical information in the 1st half of the book is specific, easy to understand and more than I had expected. This booked helped me understand what my body was/and will be dealing moving forward from Acute Kidney Failure I highly recommend to anyone dealing with any level of Kidney disease.
Finally! A kidney diet book that lists ALL the nutrients I have to watch each day- and in one place. I searched high and low for this- most boods give separate lists and you get so confused going back and forth. This is exactly what you need to help plan your diet. It also gives you a great way to go food shopping. Thank you so much!
