I was smart enough to buy the Audible version. The author’s narration adds so much to this story. In her warm southern cadence, she explains a tumultuous upbringing, struggles with sexuality, racism, misogyny, growth, forgiveness, death and love. I pegged her as Scout, before she even mentioned her. Whew, there is so much packed into this finely crafted work. I loved the piece about Ramey’s Rolling Store and the simple joy it brought she and Virgie. Although I am from a city in the northeast, I too remember frolicking behind the truck in the clouds of DDT, ick. As a gay woman, I feel the author describes the tenor of the times for LGBT people, perfectly. Her mother’s discourse on sex was hilarious, as preached from her Easy chair. Her experiences during the Freedom Summer were frightening and her small tidbit on Robert Reich, pulls us into present day. I hope Ms. Clark is writing a screenplay. Would be fab. Somewhere up there, Harper Lee is smiling.
Enjoyed reading this book very much yet saddened by what the author and family had to go through. But all families have their secrets. As far as what happened racially and the society happenings that went on I find them true to life because I lived there at that time. I loved how the author presented herself as a child because as children we were confused on how to act about the other race. I think the author depicted it well and how hard it must have been to release family secrets even though many were already known. Even if I weren't from that area I would still buy and enjoy this book. It's written well and shows true emotions. Good read. 5 stars definitely.
I bought this book for my wife and read it to her every night. I'm about halfway through but am fully impressed with the direct, honest story-telling style. The author doesn't belabor the "Gay" aspect like some authors have done with autobiographies. It's a day-week-month telling of how life really was for Whites and Blacks in 1950's and 1960's South. Mississippi was the epicenter for much of the turmoil then. I can't really think of anything negative to say about this book so far. The author does not sugarcoat anything. A valuable book for teens and adults who want to know what it was really like.
Whether you grew up in the south during the times this author did, or are just learning the history of these times, you could not find a book truer to what it was like to be a white girl of her age living in a small town.. I can still remember the outrage I felt 25 years ago going to my Daddy’s little Georgia hometown and going to a nice buffet on the “square.†After serving myself and being made over by the owner, who knew my Grandparents, I watched in shock as he turned to the next person in line, a black girl, as he snatched the serving spoon from her hand and said, “Watch it, Girl! Now what you want?†I could serve myself, but she could touch the spoon. This was 1994!This is a must read for anyone that was young and outraged during the 50’s but had no where to turn with these feelings.
Having just finished my memoir, The Pale-Faced Lie, which will be out in May, I know first hand how hard it is to be completely honest when writing a memoir full of pain. Tena Clark has done that and more. She tells of her complicated family, aren't they all, of bigotry, alcoholism, coming to grips with sexual identity and the difficulty of facing it. This book, for all its sorrows, is uplifting with a powerful message about the equality of all people and the hope that one day it may happen. And the writing is elegant and fun to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This memoir depicts a life of wealth in the segregated South of my childhood. The writing is all right, but fails to draw the reader into the narrative.
Ms. Clark's story about growing up in a racist world is so sad when you realize this wasn't that long ago and that we still have a lot to fix in our country. Her story is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Everyone needs to read about this part of our history from such a personal standpoint. I highly recommend her book.
This book goes from sad to fear to hurt to love to comedy and back again. It has something that everyone from that era can identify with.
