This a good guide of Canada. It is comprehensive and fun. Adequate summaries of history and context are provided, as well as activities and choices for different ages or groups of people. However, it is somewhat biased toward “bohemian†parts of the cities. Often, for the sake of recommending sites off the beaten path, it suggests visits that are not worthwhile. We followed some such suggestions and ended up repeatedly going to dirty, graffiti clad sectors of the cities we toured, without the expected rewarding food or vibe. It is ok to experience the many sides of the character of a city, but the authors push this line a bit too much.
This travel guide has everything on Canada but I wish I bought individual guides for the places I'll go. It doesn't have a map for any big cities other than Vancouver.
Always like the lonely planet guides
Very helpful guidebook for our trip to Canada. Many suggestions matched what we heard from locals!
Always my favorite travel book.
very helpful
I was rather disappointed in this travel guide. My husband and I are planning a trip to Toronto and the Niagara Falls region so I picked up this travel guide in order to help figure out what we wanted to do. When I finally sat down to go through the travel guide, I was really disappointed that there really isn't a whole lot of information to be had outside of the big name sites most people already know about. The section of Toronto feels very small and less than comprehensive for such a big city. It really feels as though this guide just skims the surface of all the cities and isn't an effective travel guide for each individual city. If you aren't traveling all over Canada for short stints in each city then you end up needing to still go out and purchase a guide for the specific city because this guide isn't going to give you enough information to plan beyond a couple days. If you are like me and are just going to visit 1 or 2 cities in Canada, I would skip this guide and get one for the specific place you are visiting. If you are planning a longer haul vacation and visiting several cities then this guide might work okay and be a better option than purchasing a guide for every city.
I've been a long-time user of Lonely Planet travel books. I owned multiple (Great Britain, Germany x 2, US NY/Penn/NJ, France); I've Southeast Asia. The Canada version is my latest acquisition, and the worst among all. The writing on Quebec is simply atrocious. It's probably hailed from a middle-school class project. Maybe I'm wrong. I think a good middle-schooler can write better than that. To start with, 8 among 10 sentences have grammatical errors.Worst of all, the writing simply didn't inspire you to visit the place. To compare, I read about the Thousand Islands region straddling across the border between the US and Canada both in my old US NY/Penn/NJ LP and the on in the new Canada version. There is simply no comparison. Reading the Canada version, I don't know if I'm interested in the place. Then I went back to my US LP and that section simply piqued my interests!
